Back in May, I 'fessed up to a paralyzing case of ‘writer’s block,’ and announced I was starting from scratch on my followup novel to Depth Charge. Then, a little more than a month later, I had a cover design and a synopsis for Sweetwater. Now, here we are, two more months on, and I’m pleased to announce that the initial draft of the book is complete. Amazing what can be accomplished when you put your mind to something.
In late 2020, in an update on Depth Charge (and my first writing life article), I wrote: “I’ve found that the long summer days are not ideal for my writing mindset. I’m too much of an outdoor creature to sit inside and write while the sun is out until 9pm.” Well, times have changed. This summer has yielded some of the most fruitful writing I’ve done. And that’s despite it being a fairly busy summer, with some travel and the launch of a line of merchandise for The Grey NATO that kept me busy packing and shipping for the past couple of weeks. Not to mention a burgeoning vegetable garden to tend, a weekly podcast to record, and a Substack to write. But sometimes being busy is the best thing for productivity.
