Well in the spirit of nature, forests, adventures, history and beautiful animals - Jack London’s White Fang. The first book I remember reading and falling in love with (and that in a different language than the original). Still one of my favourite books.

This is a list close to my own heart. Read and savored all but The Long Shadowed Forest and American Primitive. I'll pick them up shortly. If, like me, you are also a fan of Mark Twain and Huckleberry Finn, I highly recommend James, a powerful version of the story from the perspective of the most honorable character in Huck Finn. Happy 4th!

Random thoughts your choices conjured up, Jason.

First, I appreciate this list, Jason. I don’t know most of these, and with the naturalist bent of many of them, it’s obvious that I need to introduce myself.

Second, I rarely wear socks myself, regardless of season. Good on ya.

Nice choices. The Snow Leopard has been a favorite for a few decades. Have you read Matthiessen's Far Tortuga? Very different style from his others, but the story of a small schooner searching for fishing grounds in the Caribbean might be up your alley.

Far Tortuga is excellent, very lyrical.

I’ve only read one of these, so more to read fodder. Thanks Jason!

Fantastic selection. I'll never forget the first time I read The Snow Leopard, it was a life-changing book.

My number one travel writer is also my number one lyricist, Neil Peart‘s books on his travels during his concert tours are amazing to read, the absolute best one is GHOSTRIDER it is the story about what he did after his daughter was killed in a car crash and his wife died of cancer all within a year. He took somewhere around a 40,000 mile motorcycle trip all over the Americas for the next year and a half. It’s amazing to read.

And then there’s Endurance by Shackleton. We both liked that book.

Still have it? Dad
