This piece has me longing for my vacation in the Kawarthas. I zoomed up the Gunflint Trail on Google Earth. Spectacular! Remote enough that I hope it won't be besieged with popularity. Nice piece as always. Wish I could make it to Chicago this weekend.
Your mention of Grand Marais brought back fond memories of staying at Clearwater Lodge and renting a cabin on Clearwater Lake. Great fishing every day and we taught my year old Golden Retriever Sandy to swim by throwing her tennis ball off of the dock until she reluctantly leaped in and began her dog paddle to make the retrieve. Soon we'd look out the cabin window and she'd be half way across the lake after a family of ducks. A call to her and she'd make a u-turn back to the cabin. Something about the north woods that can't be matched by any other place.
My wife and I grew up just North of Boston. We lived in crowded neighborhoods and spent our free time hiking or bicycling to wooded areas outside of the cities.
When we were old enough to vacation we traveled to the White Mountains of NH for some natural beauty. Hiking, climbing, skiing.
Now we live a few miles from Mt. Washington, the epicenter of the Whites. I still do moderate hikes and we both walk daily.
What amazes us nearly every day is the beauty and peace we find in the mountains. Each season is wildly different. Each day can be a surprise of brilliant blue sky of rain with the wind pushing every drop around the seams of our Gortex.
How fortunate we are to live this life. Jason, I understand the wanderlust. But even more, I understand the serenity found in those special places.

Jason, this is exactly why I suggested St Kilda to you both!
The North Shore of MN and the BWCA FTW. I love that part of the state. Definitely one of my favorite places in the world.
Cheers to taking the road less traveled!
