The silence woke me up. The engines had finally shut down and their constant thrum had resonated in my head for the whole night, white noise to offset (or maybe enhance) my mild sense of motion sickness. Now, lying in my cramped bunk aboard the Undersea Hunter, I looked at the bottom of the bed above me and contemplated the thousands of feet of water below me. Had I remembered my spare mask? Did I adequately grease my camera housing’s seals? How much lead should I carry to achieve neutral buoyancy? The boat ride from Cabo San Lucas to the Revillagigedos archipelago takes close to 30 hours of steady steaming. There is no airport there, no duty free, dive shops, or food trucks. In fact, once you arrive, you still never touch dry land. This is out on the wild edge, and you’d better come prepared because there’s no easy way home.
