Every year for the past few, Gishani and I have spent Thanksgiving at my parents’ house. Nowadays, Mom makes the turkey and we tackle the sides. This year was a little bit different. I made myself a separate batch of mashed potatoes, one of my few specialties, without using butter. After dinner, I skipped the pie. This wasn’t merely out of a resolution to lose a few pounds. Indirectly, my recent dietary discipline traces back to some emergency surgery I had this year, but not in a way you might think.
