Back in the dark days of 2020, I started Swimpruf after listening to the sage words of a mentor, who told me that subscription-based content was going to be the future of publishing, or rather “content consumption.” Ironic, since it was also the past, in printed magazine form at least. And indeed, I’ve watched the online publications for whom I used to contribute move towards more sponsored content, advertising, and e-commerce for revenue sources. This has led to, in some cases, less independent viewpoints, blurred lines between commerce and editorial, and often less compelling stories. To offer something a bit more old fashioned, I launched my own small scale newsletter. I wanted to try something new, and something wholly my own.
