You’d think that in almost five years of writing a Substack called “Swimpruf” that I’d have written about swimming at least once. Lo and behold, I went through the archives and found only a handful of mentions of my Alcatraz swim. Besides that, not much, and that feels like an oversight. You might say that mine has largely been a “life aquatic,” if you consider my career path to date. But a more accurate description is a life subaquatic since I’ve spent way more time under the surface than on top. Still, swimming has been a significant part of my life, at least for the past two decades. But it’s been a complicated history.
