“A man’s got to know his limitations.” So said Dirty Harry in the 1973 film, Magnum Force, and he was right. For me, I know where my limits are when it comes to diving (180 feet, no caves), fashion (no tank tops or gold jewelry), and home improvement (no plumbing or major wiring jobs). When it comes to auto repair, I’ve largely stayed above the belt line and avoided brake or suspension work, but am happy to tinker under the bonnet. But I still find electrical work on a vehicle largely an inscrutable dark art. I’ve had minor successes with wiring up some fog lamps, but otherwise, a multimeter and soldering iron are better left in the hands of someone who knows what he’s doing. So when the Defender’s rear right indicator stopped working, I should have known better than to dabble. But I didn’t.
