Is it too early for New Year’s resolutions? Don’t answer that. I don’t like New Year’s resolutions anyway. But maybe you’ve detected a theme in my writing lately. (A friend recently called my Substack “public journaling” and I guess it is.) I’m going through a process of personal renewal and growth, and it’s led to a lot of self-reflection about what is important to me, and what kind of person I want to be. I want to be less about “stuff” and more about experiences. I want to be more mindful about my travel, and do more locally or regionally instead of hopping on planes every month. I want to build on my hard won fitness and set some new goals. I want to learn a few new skills. I want to push my introvert comfort zone and meet some new people, take chances socially and try to make a difference, no matter how small.
At the beginning of this year, when I had no idea of what was in store for me, I sort of backed my way into some “resolutions”: an alcohol-free six months, ever longer planks, and complete the Fan Dance. These weren’t things I announced on January 1st. I just started a few things and never stopped. That’s all well and good but I thought being a little more deliberate and at least jot down some ideas might be a helpful exercise, if only as a set of guiding principles. It will also be interesting to look back in 12 months and see where I landed. Because, as I’ve learned, years never unspool as you expect them to. With all this in mind, here is a list of loose goals for 2025.
